Driver accused of drunk crash kills Ohio teacher, injures fiancée

On September 6, a crash on Route 33 near Crestline, Ohio, resulted in the death of 23-year-old Cameron Lyon, a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Crestline Exempted Village Schools, and left his fiancée Abrielle Kerns in critical condition. Police say Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, who was driving under the influence, veered off the road and collided with the couple, killing Lyon instantly. Ohio State Highway Patrol officers detained Uribe-Gonzalez and charged him with aggravated vehicular homicide, drunken driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid license.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement identified him as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico and filed a detainer. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin condemned the act, emphasizing the victim's lost future and the driver’s illegal status. Lyon’s mother, Andrea Lyon, expressed profound grief, recalling her son’s humor and love for gathering friends. Kerns continues to recover in an ICU.
