DWP launches new leaflets urging pensioners to check eligibility for £4,500 yearly boost

The Department for Work and Pensions is sending leaflets to 660,000 homes in seven UK regions to prompt pensioners to verify their entitlement to Pension Credit, which can add about £4,500 a year.

The Department for Work and Pensions is distributing informational leaflets to 660,000 households in seven UK locations to highlight the Pension Credit benefit, which on average provides around £4,500 annually. This effort builds on a previous outreach that produced 33,500 new applications, the highest ever recorded. Minister for Pensions Torsten Bell said many seniors miss out on support they are entitled to, and the material emphasizes that eligibility extends beyond the targeted areas and is not automatically barred by property ownership or savings under £10,000.

Independent Age’s Morgan Vine noted that over a million eligible older people missed out on £2.5 billion of support in 2023/24. Personal finance expert Joe Lytwyn urged retirees and families to use the official calculator and consider that even a modest award can unlock additional help with council tax, heating and other costs. Claims can be submitted via the DWP website, telephone line 0800 99 1234, or post, and successful applications may be back-dated up to three months.
