Education Ministry adopts API-based rules for school closures during haze

The Ministry of Education will follow the National Haze Action Plan, using Air Pollutant Index readings to decide when to suspend outdoor activities or close schools.

The Ministry of Education announced a coordinated system that aligns school operating decisions with the National Haze Action Plan (PTJK). Outdoor lessons will be postponed when the Air Pollutant Index (API) passes 100, while a reading over 200 will trigger full school closures. Minister Fadhlina Sidek emphasized that API values can change rapidly, and premature closures could waste valuable teaching days.

The ministry welcomed guidance from the National Disaster Management Agency and stressed that children's safety remains paramount. Parents are allowed to keep vulnerable children at home during severe haze, provided they notify school authorities. The new protocol seeks to give families clearer expectations while maintaining educational continuity.

Why it matters

It sets clear, health-based criteria for school operations during haze, helping parents and schools plan safely.
