Egypt dismisses Libya parliament's approval of Turkey-Libya maritime agreement
Egypt's foreign ministry said the Libyan parliament's ratification of the Turkey-Libya memorandum on maritime zones has no legal effect for Cairo.
Egypt's foreign ministry announced that the Libyan parliament's endorsement of the Turkey-Libya memorandum on maritime jurisdiction will not be recognized by Cairo. The statement emphasized that the 2019 agreement, signed between the Government of National Accord and the Turkish Republic, lacks any legal force for Egypt. Officials highlighted that the memorandum contravenes principles of international maritime law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982, which govern exclusive economic zones and continental shelves.
According to the ministry, the pact infringes on Egypt's sovereign rights in the Mediterranean. The Egyptian government reiterated its prior rejection of the memorandum and warned it will defend its maritime claims against any violations.
Why it matters
The dispute could affect maritime boundaries, resource rights and regional stability in the Mediterranean.
