Eight arrested after settler attacks on US photographer and European diplomats in West Bank
Israeli police say eight people were detained following assaults by masked settlers on a US photojournalist and a group of European diplomats in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli police reported that eight suspects have been taken into custody after masked Israeli settlers attacked one outlet photographer, Heidi Levine, while she was covering an olive harvest in the occupied West Bank. Levine was struck with clubs, sustained a broken back and had her money, passport and camera gear stolen; twelve additional people were injured in the same incident. The following day, the same group of settlers targeted a delegation of European diplomats, beating several of them and striking 78-year-old French official Bernard Baudoux with iron rods.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed outrage over the footage and demanded an end to the criminal violence, while French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot issued a similar condemnation. The identities of the arrested individuals and whether they remain in detention have not been disclosed. The incidents have prompted diplomatic protests from the United States and France.
