Emanuele Fiano threatens to quit the Democratic Party over antisemitism bill vote

Emanuele Fiano, who serves on the International Committee of Auschwitz and leads Sinistra per Israele, wrote that the Democratic Party's decision to vote against the antisemitism draft—already passed by the Senate and now before the Chamber—represents an unforgivable breach of its identity. He recounted learning of the vote while at Birkenau, where he reflected on his family's Holocaust experiences and the ongoing violence in Gaza.

Fiano argued that legitimate criticism of Israel's government should not be conflated with antisemitism, noting that the IHRA definition explicitly protects political speech. He also highlighted the party’s past support for the definition in European resolutions and Italian national strategy. The deputy questioned how the law would be applied and warned that the party risks losing its moral compass if it continues to reject the measure.
