Eritrean soldiers spotted driving through Ethiopian town of Adigrat amid rising tensions
Local witnesses reported seeing dozens of Eritrean soldiers in off-white camouflage pass through the northern Ethiopian town of Adigrat, marking the first confirmed presence of Eritrean forces inside Ethiopia since the conflict reignited.
On Wednesday, several witnesses in the northern Ethiopian town of Adigrat reported that dozens of Eritrean soldiers traveled through the area in two trucks, recognizable by their off-white camouflage uniforms. A third resident, though not present at the time, said family members also confirmed the presence of Eritrean troops, but the reports remain unverified. Gebreigziabher Beyene, commander of the pro-government Tigray Peace Force, affirmed that Eritrean forces have entered Tigray in uniform, equipped with heavy weaponry, and are currently being struck by drones.
He added that Eritrea appears to be deploying troops deliberately to keep the fighting within Tigrayan territory. The observations follow Eritrea’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Ethiopia after Addis Ababa closed its embassy in Asmara and expelled ten Eritrean diplomats. Ethiopia has previously accused Eritrea, along with Egypt and Sudan, of supporting the armed alliance that includes the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, a claim the three nations deny. The incident, if confirmed, would represent the first sighting of Eritrean troops inside Ethiopia since the renewed conflict began on 23 September.
Why it matters
The sighting suggests Eritrea may be directly involved in Ethiopia's Tigray war, raising regional security concerns.
