Escalating Black Sea attacks threaten NATO borders and global grain shipments

Six commercial vessels have been hit in ten days near Bulgaria and Romania, raising concerns about maritime safety and NATO security.

In the past ten days, six merchant vessels operating near the Bulgarian and Romanian coasts have been struck, an escalation attributed mainly to Russian forces. The cargo ship Alfa Watan was hit by aerial and naval drones, while a Bulgarian ferry crew found only a capsized lifeboat and no trace of its ten members. Another ship, HS Dignity, suffered an attack that killed 11 sailors, and two chemical tankers, Wine Trader and Yara J, caught fire after being hit, leaving seven crew members missing.

Experts say the Black Sea is becoming one of the world’s most hazardous trade routes, with Russia aiming to curb Ukrainian grain exports. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has spoken with Bulgarian and Romanian leaders about heightened security and the possibility of invoking Article 4 of the NATO treaty.

Why it matters

The attacks jeopardize global food supplies and bring conflict directly to NATO’s southeastern flank.
