Escalating clashes in Hormuz and Red Sea raise oil market concerns

Iranian state media reported a series of powerful explosions near the ports of Sirik, Minab and the Kish Island area along the Hormuz Strait. While the United States has continued air campaigns over southern Iran since the start of the month, it did not disclose details of any strike on the day in question. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had hit two U.S. warships and eight oil tankers in response to the bombings and unilaterally declared a navigation restriction zone off the southern coast.

Meanwhile, Houthi rebels in Yemen fired drones or missiles at Saudi Arabia's King Fahd air base, a key site used to support Saudi operations against the rebels. The Houthi group has also been targeting the Bab al-Mandab strait, a crucial passage between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as Saudi forces increased air attacks on rebel-held territories. These developments have lifted Brent crude by more than $3 per barrel, reaching its highest level since May 2022 on the ICE futures exchange. The heightened tension threatens the flow of oil through two of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints.
