Estonia warns Russia that a Baltic invasion could end like the Strait of Hormuz

Estonia's prime minister likened a possible Russian attack on a Baltic NATO member to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, urging Moscow to reconsider.

At a briefing with NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte, Estonia's prime minister Kristen Michal warned that a Russian assault on a Baltic NATO ally would likely end in a scenario similar to the Strait of Hormuz blockage. He cited foreign minister Margus Tashkana's recent statement that NATO could shut that sea lane in a matter of hours, drawing a parallel to current U.S. pressure on Iran. Rutte dismissed the notion that Russia would act irrationally against NATO but affirmed that the alliance monitors any Russian force buildup and has contingency plans across its eastern border.

He emphasized NATO's commitment to defend every inch of allied territory, from Tallinn to Paris and Washington. The discussion also touched on the need to boost support for Ukraine as winter approaches and Russian aggression persists.

Why it matters

The warning highlights NATO's readiness and the potential for broader conflict if Russia targets a Baltic NATO member.
