EU Commission President von der Leyen warns of escalating Black Sea drone attacks after ship capsizes

Ursula von der Leyen said she is deeply concerned after a commercial vessel carrying Ukrainian and Azerbaijani crew was hit by drones off Romania, capsizing and leaving three crew members missing.

Ursula von der Leyen posted on X that she is profoundly worried about a recent escalation of Russian-linked drone activity in the Black Sea. The incident involved a commercial ship, staffed by ten Ukrainian and three Azerbaijani mariners, which was struck by drones approximately 24 km off the coast of Constanța, Romania. The attack caused major damage, the vessel capsized, and it now faces imminent sinking.

Rescue efforts by a nearby commercial vessel saved ten crew members—nine alive and one deceased—while three individuals remain missing. Romanian officials received the distress call at about 10:00. Von der Leyen labeled the assault a violation of international law and expressed sympathy for the families of the deceased and missing sailors.
