EU High Representative Kaja Kallas warns Turkey over planned gas pipeline to occupied Cyprus

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, replied to a query from PASOK MEP Giannis Maniatis concerning Turkey’s plan to build a natural-gas pipeline to the parts of Cyprus under Turkish control. She stressed that respecting the sovereign rights of all EU members remains a top agenda item and that the pipeline question has been raised in every recent EU-Turkey dialogue, including visits by senior EU officials to Ankara.

Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s full commitment to a comprehensive, UN-mandated solution for Cyprus, in line with Security Council resolutions and EU principles. She warned that any restrictive measures against entities involved in the project would have to be adopted unanimously by the Council of the EU. The High Representative called on Turkey to honor the sovereignty of Cyprus and to support a peaceful settlement of the island’s division.
