EU officials say gas supplies remain stable despite low storage levels

At the latest Gas Coordination Group session, representatives from national authorities, the European Commission and industry evaluated the market and noted that gas inventories are beneath typical levels for this time of year. Nevertheless, the Commission maintains that the supply to protected consumers, such as households and critical services, remains secure under existing EU rules. The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (Entsog) presented its initial assessment, echoing the Commission’s view.

Energy spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said the EU is ready to contemplate further actions should a supply risk emerge, without specifying what those actions might be. Meanwhile, the EU is working on a security-energy reform that could allow demand adjustments and, in extreme cases, selective load shedding. Repsol CEO Josu Jon Imaz highlighted that limited refinery capacity also constrains the overall energy market.
