EU warns online platforms against streaming planned US execution

The European Union has cautioned digital services not to broadcast the upcoming execution of Nidal Hasan in the United States.

U.S. authorities plan to air the execution of Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood attack. The European Union has issued a warning to digital platforms, stating they must apply their internal policies that already forbid live executions and shocking violent material. EU spokesperson Thomas Regnier noted that Meta, X and TikTok each have rules against such content.

He added that the EU will enforce the Digital Services Act against any platform that does not uphold its own terms. The DSA gives regulators the power to levy substantial fines and, in extreme cases, order temporary shutdowns of non-compliant services. The warning comes as the U.S. defense secretary Pete Hegseth announced the plan to make the execution public.

Why it matters

The EU is asserting its regulatory reach over global platforms to prevent the spread of graphic execution footage.
