Eurogroup Sets October Deadline to Nominate Isabel Schnabel’s ECB Successor

The Eurogroup gave member states until 28 October to propose candidates to replace Isabel Schnabel on the ECB Executive Board, with a decision likely at the November meeting.

The Eurogroup has launched the process to find a replacement for Isabel Schnabel on the European Central Bank’s Executive Board, setting 28 October as the deadline for member states to submit names. Eurozone finance ministers are scheduled to discuss the nominations at their next meeting on 9 November, after which the Eurogroup will select a candidate for the European Council’s formal appointment, subject to input from the ECB and European Parliament.

The procedure was triggered by a letter from ECB President Christine Lagarde to European Council President António Costa, following Schnabel’s September 24 announcement that she will step down on 3 January and assume a role at the IMF as financial counsellor and director of its monetary and capital markets department from 4 January 2027. This vacancy ends a continuous German hold on the seat since the ECB’s creation and is the first of three senior exits, with chief economist Philip Lane leaving in May 2027 and Lagarde’s term ending in October 2027. The timing coincides with broader negotiations over top EU financial posts amid rising public deficits, higher bond yields, and persistent debt challenges across member states.

Why it matters

The new appointment will influence ECB policy and reflects shifting power dynamics within EU financial institutions.
