FAW chief urges FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign over commercial plan

Football Association of Wales chief executive Noel Mooney says Gianni Infantino should step down after criticism of his proposal to sell FIFA’s competition assets.

Noel Mooney, the chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, publicly called for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA president, citing the controversy surrounding Infantino’s attempt to sell stakes in World Cup and other competition rights. Although the sale plan has been abandoned, Mooney believes the episode has caused lasting harm to the sport. Wales led the home nations in pulling its backing for Infantino’s re-election, prompting similar moves by other football bodies.

In an interview on one outlet Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Mooney said the FAW opposes Infantino’s continuation and expects discussions in the coming weeks. He urged a full review of FIFA’s governance structures, warning that too much authority rests with a single individual. Mooney expressed sympathy for FIFA staff and council members, noting that trust has been eroded among many football associations worldwide.

Why it matters

The call for Infantino’s resignation highlights growing unrest over FIFA’s leadership and its commercial decisions.
