FBI, Capitol Police investigate mailed letters with unknown substances tied to DSA address

Federal investigators are probing envelopes containing unidentified substances that were sent to congressional offices and bore a return address linked to the Democratic Socialists of America.

A coordinated investigation by the FBI, US Postal Inspection Service and Capitol Police is under way following the discovery of letters that contained unknown substances and were addressed to congressional offices. Staff members received a photograph of an envelope marked "DSA" and bearing a return address at the Financial District building that the Democratic Socialists of America historically listed on its membership paperwork.

Law-enforcement officials said they are working to stop additional mail before it reaches its targets, but warned that some items might still be delivered. The suspicious correspondence has also been intercepted at addresses unrelated to the Capitol. Requests for comment from the three agencies and the DSA have not been answered.
