White powder mailed to U.S. election offices sparks safety warnings and evacuations

Authorities say unidentified white powder was sent to several U.S. election offices, prompting warnings that the packages could be hazardous.

Investigators have confirmed that white powder was mailed to a number of election offices across the United States, leading to safety alerts from law enforcement. At least two government sites, one in Louisiana and another in Oklahoma, were temporarily cleared while the material was examined. Police warned all recipients that the parcels might pose a health risk and should be handled with care. The incident echoes a prior case in which fentanyl was sent to election-related offices before the 2024 vote. Additionally, postal authorities stopped a similar delivery in Ohio before it reached its destination.

Why it matters

The mailings raise concerns about security and safety at critical election infrastructure ahead of the upcoming vote.
