FBI grapples with massive data breach potentially exposing all its personnel

Federal investigators are confronting what could be one of the most extensive cyber intrusions of the FBI, with internal officials suggesting that a malicious actor may be harvesting personal data for all agency staff. The bureau continues to state that an internal probe remains active. Since late September, the hacker group ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for breaching FBI systems and exfiltrating confidential files.

Independent media outlets have examined and verified portions of the leaked data, which contain information on agents tied to the Remote Operations Unit, a highly sensitive division. Some of the compromised records also reveal the identities of agents' spouses. The scope of the breach is considered potentially catastrophic for the agency's security posture.
