FDA Classifies 1.7 Million-Pound Sugar Recall as Moderate Risk

A voluntary recall launched by United Sugar Producers and Refiners on August 19 targets about 1.7 million pounds of sugar that may contain undeclared wheat, a major allergen. The FDA has designated the recall as Class II, indicating that consumption could cause temporary or medically reversible symptoms, though severe outcomes are considered unlikely. The recall includes approximately 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar, distributed in both two-pound consumer packages and larger 25- and 50-pound commercial bags.

Products bearing batch numbers MHD26223 through MHD26229, among others, were shipped to eight states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. Retailers, including Target stores that carry the Good & Gather private-label brand, are pulling the items, and the FDA advises anyone with wheat allergies to verify batch codes, return the sugar for a refund, or dispose of it safely. No broader recall of all brands has been announced.
