Fidesz calls former minister Szijjártó's BYD role a major opportunity, not a security threat

The Fidesz parliamentary group defended former foreign-trade minister Szijjártó Péter’s appointment as a global leader at Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD, labeling it a "huge opportunity" and denying any national-security danger. Szijjártó, who gave up his parliamentary mandate in July, will manage BYD’s external relations and the development of new business lines. The opposition Tisza Party criticized the government, urging the national-security committee to interrogate him about his new role, while the committee’s secretariat said it does not know how to reach the former MP.

Police clarified last week that no evidence of misconduct exists, noting a previously dismissed corruption allegation linked to a public thank-you for BYD’s plant in Szeged. Fidesz dismissed the Tisza Party as a politically motivated group incapable of governing. The clash underscores ongoing tensions over foreign investment and perceived security implications in Hungary.
