Fidesz spokesman rejects any talk of Hankó Balázs resigning his seat

Following the police custody of Fidesz lawmaker Hankó Balázs, the party's press chief Bertalan Havasi responded to inquiries, stating that the party views Hankó as a political detainee and that no criminal wrongdoing has been proven. Havasi emphasized that any move for Hankó to surrender his parliamentary mandate would represent a concession to what he termed new-communist arbitrariness, and therefore is not on the agenda.

Although the parliament suspended Hankó's immunity, he has not lost his seat and continues to receive the same benefits as other MPs, though he cannot currently attend votes. Under current law, his mandate would only terminate if a definitive court judgment sentenced him to prison or barred him from public office, or if he chose to resign voluntarily, allowing the party to replace him from its previous national list. Havasi also noted that other senior Fidesz figures have recently left the parliamentary group, but the party retains a two-thirds majority, minimizing the impact of a single absent member.
