FIFA faces mounting opposition to Infantino as 2027 election approaches

Internal and external criticism of Gianni Infantino has intensified after the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise plan, prompting UEFA to announce a pending vote of no confidence unless he resigns. Both CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have issued statements questioning the proposal’s governance and due-process. Several figures are emerging as possible opponents: Victor Montagliani, the Canadian CONCACAF chief, has signaled intent to run; Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, AFC president and former 2016 candidate, remains a plausible contender; PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, though currently uninterested, holds considerable influence; and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, a vocal critic of Infantino, may struggle to garner support beyond Europe. The outcome will hinge on whether the voting blocs can coalesce around an alternative candidate.
