Flash Floods from Glacial Collapse Leave Hundreds Dead and Thousands Missing on Nepal-Tibet Border

An unprecedented flash flood triggered by a glacial collapse swept the Nepal-Tibet border area, killing more than 270 people and leaving over 1,500 individuals, including more than 800 tourists, unaccounted for. Satellite images showed an ice-rock avalanche breaking off at about 5,200 metres and plunging roughly 1,200 metres into the valley, creating a fast-moving debris flow that entered the Lhende River and surged into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.

Experts such as geologist Prakash Pokharel and engineering geologist Vikram Gupta confirmed that a large portion of the glacier snout collapsed, while Dan Shugar noted extensive snow melt in the preceding 24 hours. The surge raised Trishuli water levels by up to nine metres in half an hour, destroying homes, vehicles and a metal bridge. Although the region has seen a handful of similar collapses in the past decade, scientists warn that accelerating glacier loss across the Himalayas—driven by rapid warming—could increase the frequency of such events. The disaster underscores the difficulty of flood warning in the absence of rainfall and the lethal nature of the resulting mud-water mixture.
