Flash floods on Nepal-Tibet border leave nearly 300 Indian pilgrims missing
Deadly flash floods along the Nepal-China frontier have left at least 290 Indian pilgrims, including two women, unaccounted for.
A flash-flood event on the Nepal-China border disrupted a pilgrimage convoy heading toward Mount Kailash, leaving at least 290 Indian nationals missing. Among them are Subhrasree Chakraborty, a critical-care technologist, and Rina Banerjee, a private tutor, both of whom had cleared Nepal immigration and were waiting to cross into Tibet. Their last messages indicated the border formalities were finished, after which contact was lost.
Families have been unable to determine whether the women entered Chinese territory before the floods or were caught in the waters. The broader disaster has produced a missing-persons count of over 500 across the region, but specific information about the two women has not been provided by officials. Tour operators and group managers have also reported no updates on the fate of the travelers.
