Former Budapest mayor Tarlós blames overconfidence and hidden corruption for Fidesz loss
In a recent interview, former mayor Tarlós István says Fidesz’s election defeat stemmed from excessive self-confidence and undisclosed corruption involving a small circle close to Orbán Viktor.
Speaking to 24.hu, former Budapest mayor Tarlós István analysed the causes of Fidesz’s electoral loss, pointing to a heightened but partly unfounded public discontent with the party and Prime Minister Orbán Viktor. He described the ruling party’s pervasive overconfidence as a self-inflicted wound that compromised professional judgment in favour of loyalty. Tarlós highlighted that a limited, affluent circle benefitted disproportionately during Fidesz’s rule, acknowledging that the exact extent of Orbán’s involvement remains unknown.
He criticised the party’s centralised authority and its combative communication tactics, especially within the Budapest faction. The interview also touched on a proposed centralised parking system, which Tarlós supports, suggesting revenue should fund the under-financed BKV or city projects, aligning with Gergely Karácsony’s stance. Overall, he warned that without tangible results, the party’s popularity may erode further.
