Former culture minister Hankó Balázs appears in court in handcuffs
Hankó Balázs, a Fidesz MP and ex-culture minister, arrived handcuffed at the Kecskemét District Court for a hearing.
On Thursday morning, Hankó Balázs entered the Kecskemét District Court in handcuffs, accompanied by police officers. He remained in the hearing room for roughly a quarter of an hour before the investigating judge determined the next steps regarding his detention. Authorities claim that, during his tenure as culture minister, he participated in distributing numerous subsidies that ultimately supported the Fidesz campaign or his own private interests.
After the parliament voted to revoke his immunity, he stayed in the legislative building for a time but says he did not hide. Following a summons on Monday evening, he left the parliament, was briefly detained after a minor traffic incident, and was taken to the tax authority’s Huszti street office before being transferred to Kecskemét for questioning on alleged abuse of public funds. He has filed complaints against both his detention and the charges, maintaining that the case is a politically motivated “culture-policy battle.”

How the sides frame it
HIGH AGREEMENTAll camps report the handcuffed appearance of former minister Balázs Hankó, the suspension of his parliamentary immunity and his detention on suspicion of misusing cultural funds, but left-leaning coverage highlights his protest and alleged fraud, right-leaning coverage stresses the legal justification and security risks, while centrist coverage sticks to a plain factual account.
LEFT
Frames the story as a scandalous arrest of a former minister accused of large-scale fraud, underscoring his protest and the political controversy.
RIGHT
Frames the story as a legal procedure justified by flight-risk and obstruction concerns, noting multiple ex-ministers being detained.
The left emphasises
- Hankó arrived in handcuffs and was escorted by police.
- He is accused of distributing hundreds of grants that financed the Fidesz campaign or personal lives.
- He shouted about "freedom of speech" after being taken away.
