Former Justice Minister Radu Marinescu slams Dominic Fritz for linking his exit to the 1989 Revolution

Former Justice Minister Radu Marinescu publicly rebuked Timișoara mayor Dominic Fritz, alleging that the mayor’s recent gathering, “Timișoara. Revoluția continuă,” turned the anniversary of the 1989 Revolution into a personal political rally ahead of his forced resignation. Marinescu labeled the event an “offense” to the martyrs of December 1989, insisting that no heroes died to provide alibis for Fritz’s alleged conflict-of-interest issues.

He dismissed Fritz’s self-praise for improvements in public services as irrelevant to the historic sacrifices. The criticism came as Fritz used the occasion to mobilize support against the ruling parties PSD and AUR, while also warning against intimidation from political opponents. Marinescu’s comments highlight the tension between local political maneuvering and the reverence for Romania’s revolutionary legacy.
