Former minister resigns and criticizes appointment of controversial judge

Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz left the government of Donald Tusk and quit her role in Poland 2050, denouncing the Sejm vote that installed Maciej Berek on the Constitutional Tribunal.

Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz announced her resignation from Donald Tusk’s cabinet and her resignation as leader of Poland 2050 after a contentious Sejm vote on ending two-term limits for local officials, a vote that divided her party’s representatives. She posted on X that the party now rests in the hands of its founder, who had left and returned. A video released by wPolsce24 shows her alleging that Maciej Berek, a former minister appointed to the Constitutional Tribunal, did not meet the constitutional requirement of a ten-year legal advisory career and had not taken the presidential oath.

President Karol Nawrocki has expressed doubts about Berek’s eligibility. Zbigniew Bogucki, chief of the President’s Chancellery, labeled the government “hypocritical” and “law-breaking” for pushing Berek, whom he described as a close ally of Tusk, into the court.

Why it matters

The resignations and accusations highlight internal disputes over judicial appointments and rule-of-law standards in Poland.
