Former premier Bolojan warns budget deficit could spiral into full economic crisis
Ilie Bolojan told a PNL gathering in Sfântu Gheorghe that persistent deficits and overspending risk turning a budget shortfall into a nationwide economic downturn.
Ilie Bolojan addressed a political bureau of the National Liberal Party in Sfântu Gheorghe, warning that Romania’s ongoing budget deficits and unchecked spending will continue to test the incumbent or any successor administration. He recalled taking office in 2025 amid a difficult environment and argued that reforms were stalled by PSD’s obstruction and a censure motion that toppled the government. Bolojan emphasized that removing a government without an alternative, especially during overlapping internal and external crises, exacerbates fiscal contraction.
He cited a historic drought that crippled the Cernavodă nuclear plant, cutting 20% of national energy output, and highlighted how wars in Ukraine and the Gulf have driven up fuel and fertilizer prices. The former premier urged one outlet cabinet to maintain fiscal balance to prevent a budget crisis from evolving into a broader economic collapse affecting all Romanians.
Why it matters
Unaddressed fiscal imbalances could push Romania into a deeper recession, impacting citizens' livelihoods.
