Former Speaker Kövér criticises Fidesz for missed education reforms and election defeat

Kövér László said Fidesz failed to act on many opportunities, especially in education, and reflected on the party's unexpected loss in the recent election.

In a televised appearance on KözBeszéd, former speaker Kövér László argued that Fidesz missed many chances to improve the country, with education being a prime example of neglected school upgrades. He emphasized that one outlet education system also bears the burden of broader societal issues such as family disintegration. Regarding the recent election, Kövér said polls suggested a tight contest and even on election day there was hope for victory, yet the loss after 16 years in power was a surprise in its magnitude.

He admitted the party erred in several areas, especially in building dialogue with young people, which should have been stronger earlier. While commenting on Orbán Viktor's potential role after 2030, Kövér warned that his continued influence does not guarantee he will be the prime-ministerial nominee, noting that constitutional changes now limit a prime minister to two terms.

Why it matters

The comments reveal internal criticism of Fidesz's policy failures and signal uncertainty about the party's future leadership.
