Former Sudan President Omar al-Bashir transferred to Khartoum hospital for urgent care

Omar al-Bashir, the deposed Sudanese leader, has been moved to a military hospital in Khartoum for medical tests and treatment, his lawyer said.

Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s former president who was removed from power in 2019, has been transferred to a military-run hospital in Khartoum for medical examinations, according to his lawyer Mohamed Alhassan Alameen. After being moved from prison to a hospital and later guarded in Merowe, Bashir’s condition was deemed critical, prompting calls for treatment outside Sudan. His family announced that his health situation cannot be delayed any longer, yet they have not received authorization for an overseas transfer.

Prominent Sudanese Islamist personalities have publicly supported the request on social media. The move occurs amid the ongoing civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, a conflict that has devastated much of the country. Bashir remains wanted by the International Criminal Court and faces additional legal cases within Sudan.

Why it matters

Bashir’s health and possible foreign transfer could affect Sudan’s fragile political balance and draw international scrutiny.
