Former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal surrenders to Goa court after rape conviction

After being convicted in August 2026 by the Goa bench of the Bombay high court for a 2013 rape and sexual-assault case, former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal surrendered to the Mapusa Court in Goa. The Supreme Court of India had earlier directed him to appear before the court before his appeal could be considered. Representing Tejpal, senior advocate Kapil Sibal sought an exemption, noting the journalist’s prior six-month detention and continuous bail, but the Supreme Court dismissed the request.

The court ordered Tejpal to submit a surrender certificate by September 21, 2026, after which the criminal appeal will be listed for hearing on September 22, 2026. The conviction carries a ten-year prison term. Tejpal has indicated he will continue to challenge the verdict on appeal.
