Four members of the same family who perished in an arson blaze on the Birchwood estate in Waterford on Tuesday were brought to a local church on Sunday for funeral rites. Four distinct hearses delivered the wooden coffins, two of which were white, and the church bell rang as they were moved inside the parish centre. A guard of honour composed of Johnville football club players stood on the steps, and one coffin was covered with an Irish tricolour flag.
The bodies will remain on display for three hours before being interred at Kilbarry Cemetery. Two other children, aged six and 14, survived the fire but are in critical condition at a hospital. In a related legal development, 21-year-old Cian Stacey and 31-year-old Jessica Dalton appeared before Clonmel District Court on charges of criminal damage and assault causing serious harm, and were remanded in custody pending a Waterford District Court appearance.
