France deploys maritime patrol aircraft to Romania for Black Sea surveillance

At Romania's request, France has stationed an ATLANTIQUE 2 patrol plane at Mihail Kogălniceanu air base to conduct surveillance over the western Black Sea.

Responding to a Romanian appeal, the French Navy's Mediterranean and Black Sea Command positioned an ATLANTIQUE 2 maritime patrol aircraft at the Captain Aviator Constantin Cantacuzino Air Base in Mihail Kogălniceanu. The deployment aims to carry out surveillance and reconnaissance missions over the western Black Sea, with flight plans organized alongside the Romanian Naval Component's Vice Admiral Ioan Georgescu and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.

Objectives include identifying navigation dangers and bolstering protection of critical assets within Romania's exclusive economic zone. The mission aligns with NATO's deterrence operations and underscores the importance of allied interoperability. Additionally, the presence offers Romanian navy personnel opportunities for joint training aboard the aircraft and through coordinated activities with French warships. Romanian maritime authorities continue systematic monitoring of the Black Sea to counter threats linked to the conflict in Ukraine.

Why it matters

The deployment strengthens NATO's maritime presence and improves Romanian capabilities to safeguard Black Sea navigation.
