France imposes curfews as riots erupt across major cities

Widespread violence broke out in French cities after student protests turned chaotic, prompting authorities to enforce curfews and protest bans.

What began as peaceful student demonstrations over public education quality in September escalated into the country's worst rioting in decades. Over the weekend, thousands clashed with police, set municipal buildings and cars ablaze, and looted shops. The French Interior Ministry reports more than 2,000 arrests and nearly 1,000 injured officers. In response, curfews and bans on gatherings were imposed on October 19 in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice and Lille, with further protests expected.

Why it matters

The unrest threatens public safety and could disrupt daily life and economic activity across France's major urban centers.
