French government extends summer diesel sales amid Middle East supply strains

Facing fuel shortages tied to the prolonged Middle East war, the French government issued an exceptional order allowing retailers to continue offering summer-grade diesel, which remains usable down to 0 °C. Normally, a transition to winter diesel, tolerant of much lower temperatures, would occur in early November, but this requirement has been delayed by a few weeks. The decree stresses that sellers are wholly liable for any problems, including the risk of fuel solidifying in colder, especially mountainous, regions, and must inform buyers of such hazards.

The move aims to ease public anger over soaring fuel prices, a central issue in the presidential campaign. On the same day, ministers responsible for energy, economy, public accounts, health, maritime affairs, and small-business support will announce targeted assistance packages for households and sectors most affected. President Emmanuel Macron is slated to address the nation in a televised interview later in the week.
