French youths flaunt looting on social media as interior minister admits police loss of control

Over 2,000 French shops were looted during weekend protests, with youths posting bragging videos online, and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez saying police lost control.

Weekend demonstrations against the cost of living escalated into some of the worst rioting in recent French history, with over 2,000 shops looted and damage assessed at hundreds of millions of euros. Participants, many from Generation Z, posted videos on TikTok and X flaunting stolen items such as Under Armour apparel and mocking the CRS riot police, even claiming looting saved them money. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admitted the police had lost control and cited a lack of anticipation and insufficient deployment of roughly 60,000 officers nationwide.

He offered to resign, a move President Emmanuel Macron rejected. Authorities reported more than 2,500 detainees and nearly 1,000 injured police and gendarmes, while a demonstrator lost a hand to a crowd-control grenade. Chamber of commerce president Alain Di Crescenzo highlighted the economic toll, and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed over 2,330 arrests.

Why it matters

The unrest shows deep social discontent in France and raises questions about police preparedness and economic stability.
