Frente Amplio proposes top Madrid list slot for Irene Montero in coalition talks

Frente Amplio sent a written offer to Podemos, promising a priority Madrid list position that could be filled by Irene Montero, if the parties join a pre-election alliance.

Frente Amplio emailed a last-minute written offer to Podemos just before 22:00 on Friday, outlining terms for a coalition ahead of the upcoming general election. The proposal grants the purple party a priority exit position on the Madrid list, specifically the number two slot that could be occupied by Irene Montero. It also allows Podemos to appoint one of the spokespersons for the combined parliamentary group in the new Congress.

The alliance demands that any agreement be reached at the state level, whereas Podemos maintains its stance of negotiating only regional pacts in ten autonomous communities, alongside deals already sealed in the Comunitat Valenciana and the Canary Islands. Contacts between Podemos and IU have progressed in Murcia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Cantabria, but stalled later in the day as IU leader Antonio Maíllo pushes for a national-level accord.

Why it matters

The offer could shape the composition of a future left-wing coalition and influence candidate placement for the next Spanish general election.
