Fuel shortage threatens to suspend ferry and hydrofoil services in Gulf of Naples

A diesel shortage caused by trucker strikes could halt ship and hydrofoil connections to Ischia, Capri and Procida within two days.

Striking truckers have disrupted diesel deliveries, leaving maritime fuel supplies in the Gulf of Naples dangerously depleted. Caremar reported near-exhaustion of its reserves and alerted the Prefecture, while Medmar said it can keep services to Ischia and Procida running only until tomorrow evening. Several Capri connections have already been cancelled, and other vessels may remain docked if refuelling does not occur.

High-speed operators Alilauro, Gestur and Snav have warned passengers of possible cancellations and reduced daily trips, especially to Capri. The transport crunch could also affect island bus services, with EAV Bus able to operate only until next Monday and Procida buses facing a potential halt by Saturday. Additionally, limited recent food shipments raise concerns about supply shortages on the islands.

Why it matters

Disrupted ferry links could cripple tourism and essential supplies for the islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida.
