German military raises threat level after Russian-linked sabotage drone incidents

The Bundeswehr now classifies Russian sabotage attempts as a “significant” threat after two explosive drones were found near Leipzig/Halle airport and the Wunstorf air base.

In August, a drone equipped with explosives attempted but failed to hit Leipzig/Halle airport, and in September a farmer near the Wunstorf air base discovered a second, similarly armed drone that had apparently been in the area for two years. Based on these findings, the Bundeswehr’s latest threat analysis now rates Russian sabotage attempts against German forces as “significant,” the second-highest category on its scale.

The assessment warns that Moscow seeks to weaken German political and societal backing for Ukraine by targeting military sites, including those used for Ukrainian training and equipment. The report notes a pattern of espionage and sabotage since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, citing other suspicious drone flights over key installations such as the Arrow 3 missile-defence system and Patriot repair facilities.

Security agencies have recorded over 165 suspected sabotage cases nationwide, and officials anticipate a short-term escalation of hostile actions. Consequently, the Bundeswehr is preparing to implement enhanced protective measures at its installations and for its personnel.

Why it matters

Germany is tightening defence security as Russia appears to target its military assets to erode support for Ukraine.
