Germany plans new navy base in Emden to expand fleet support

The German Navy may gain a new home port in Emden, expanding the only existing North Sea base at Wilhelmshaven. Plans outline berths for seven frigates, ten mine-search vessels and ten tugs, with a projected workforce of a four-digit number of soldiers and civilians. Officials, including Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Lower Saxony Minister-President Olaf Lies, are scheduled to meet in Emden to outline the forthcoming process, joined by Navy Inspector Vizeadmiral Wilhelm Tobias Abry and Emden’s First Mayor Horst Jahnke.

The prospective site, the Rysumer Nacken, is a state-owned harbour expansion area with the largest unused space among Lower Saxony ports. The state government has expressed strong interest in a robust Emden location, recalling a former naval presence there until 1997. No details on the selection criteria or timeline have been disclosed.
