GOP lets candidates tailor data-center stances to local voter concerns

As the 2026 midterm cycle approaches, Republican strategists are cautioning candidates that data-center development could hurt their electoral prospects unless they address community-specific worries about power, water and land use. A recent NRSC memorandum to artificial-intelligence firms warned that voters favor Republicans who demand local votes and developer-funded utilities, while portraying Democratic opposition as a threat to U.S. AI competitiveness.

The memo also urged data-center operators to improve their public image. In Michigan, Senate nominee Mike Rogers backs a one-year halt on new facilities, while Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton backs Governor Greg Abbott’s pause on grid-access approvals and calls for water-use safeguards. Party officials stress that messaging should be customized to each district, allowing candidates to diverge from national party lines or the president’s stance, which has itself given Republicans leeway to disagree on the issue.
