Government backs highway concession after Rogán's unilateral statement averts crisis

At a government briefing, Transport and Investment Minister David Vitézy disclosed that the highway concession held by Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szíjj was once at risk of cancellation after the European Commission opened a breach procedure in April 2024. Although the Orbán administration considered ending the contract, Antal Rogán signed a unilateral declaration stating the state would not invoke the termination right while the legal case proceeds.

This move restored confidence among lenders, resulting in financing from OTP, MBH Bank and the state-owned Development Bank, allowing the concessionaire to commence upgrades such as widening the M1. The cabinet now intends to liquidate the concession company, Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., by the end of the year and hand over highway upkeep to Magyar Közút. Officials also mentioned negotiating the return of assets like highway engineering units from the concession firm.
