Government disburses RM1,000 cash aid to taxi, rental and school bus drivers
The transport ministry is giving a one-off RM1,000 payment to eligible taxi, rental-car and school-bus drivers across Malaysia to offset rising costs.
At a ceremony in Dewan Sri Pinang, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government will provide a one-off RM1,000 cash aid to roughly 38,000 taxi and rental-car drivers and 15,000 school-bus drivers nationwide, funded by RM91 million raised from auctioning special H-prefix vehicle plates. The first payout took place in Penang, with recipients receiving Bank Simpanan Nasional vouchers that can be exchanged for cash, while others will have the amount deposited into their accounts within one to two weeks.
Eligibility requires only a valid driver’s licence, and no separate application is needed. Loke added that the ministry is working with Proton and Aeon Bank on a financing programme to help drivers upgrade aging fleets at affordable rates. He urged drivers to improve vehicle standards to stay competitive, noting that Penang’s expanding tourism and the upcoming airport expansion could create new opportunities. The cash assistance aims to ease immediate financial pressure while longer-term measures boost the sector’s resilience.
Why it matters
