Habagat and multiple cyclones cause 43 deaths and widespread displacement in the Philippines

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that 43 people lost their lives as the Southwest Monsoon and four tropical cyclones battered parts of the Philippines. Landslides and drowning accounted for the majority of deaths, with a few caused by electrocution and fallen trees. Fatalities were reported in Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Pampanga, Rizal, Batangas, Quezon, the Mindoro provinces, Negros Occidental and Caloocan.

Twenty injuries were logged in Ilocos Sur, Benguet, Abra, Quezon City, Rizal and Cavite, and five individuals are still missing from Quezon City, Manila, Batangas, Rizal and Pampanga. The storms have impacted about 2.9 million families, or 10.2 million people, across several regions, leading to 814 evacuation centers sheltering 18,299 families (62,791 persons). Damage includes 3,882 partially destroyed homes and 585 completely destroyed houses. PAGASA warned that the monsoon will continue to bring rain and thunderstorms over Luzon and Visayas.
