Harvard Endowment Holds $2.2 Billion Stake in SpaceX, One of Largest Holders
Harvard Management Co. disclosed a $2.2 billion position in SpaceX, making it one of the biggest university investors in the rocket firm.
Harvard Management Co. revealed a $2.2 billion holding in SpaceX through its quarterly 13F filing, positioning the university as one of the top endowment owners of the aerospace company. The filing shows SpaceX as the most valuable individual stock among Harvard’s $4.3 billion of U.S. equity holdings, within a total endowment of $57 billion reported for June 2025. The investment reflects early bets made via venture-capital channels that have paid off after SpaceX’s record-setting IPO in June, a trend also observed at the University of California’s investment arm, the University of North Carolina, and Washington University in St. Louis.
Harvard’s disclosed stake could consist of outright shares and distributions from private funds, but a Harvard Management spokesman, Patrick McKiernan, offered no further detail. The gains arrive amid broader fiscal challenges for U.S. universities, including constrained federal research funding, a shrinking pool of college-age applicants, and modest private-equity returns. Endowments over $500 million posted a median pre-fee return of 18.9 % for the year ending in June, according to Wilshire Trust Universe Comparison Service. SpaceX’s share price hovered around $140 after a slight dip.
