Home Secretary warns far-right activist of legal action over asylum site threats

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned anti-migrant activist Daniel Thomas, describing him as a far-right extremist and outright racist. Thomas, who has a criminal record and co-founded The Patriot Platform, warned that thousands of supporters could surround a planned asylum facility in the Oxfordshire village of Piddington for days to prevent male asylum seekers from entering. His remarks came after a symbolic local referendum in which residents voted strongly against a government proposal to house 1,256 male asylum seekers at a nearby former military base.

Mahmood warned that any criminal activity linked to such intimidation will be met with the full force of the law. She also drew a line between genuine community anxieties about local change and the extremist groups exploiting those fears. The minister reiterated that self-contained sites with on-site services are the most effective way to manage pressures on surrounding areas.
