Honduran opposition lawmaker meets Taiwan's foreign minister, hints at renewed ties

Jorge Cálix, the caucus whip of Honduras' opposition Liberal Party, arrived in Taipei for a visit that marks the first public trip by a Honduran official to Taiwan since the two nations ended formal diplomatic relations in 2023. He met with Taiwan's foreign minister, Lin Chia-lung, who called the encounter a concrete demonstration of friendship and affirmed that Taiwan is prepared to consider any future relationship possibilities.

Lin highlighted the productive cooperation achieved while the countries were allies and pledged a pragmatic, open approach to any renewed engagement. Cálix expressed admiration for Taiwan's democratic and economic model and said his agenda includes exploring new cooperation based on the historic foundation. The meeting occurs against the backdrop of President Nasry Asfura's election pledge to re-establish ties, though neither side has publicly confirmed any concrete steps. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not disclose Cálix's arrival date or the duration of his stay.
