House prosecutors bar Trillanes' accusations against Vice President from impeachment questioning
The House impeachment prosecution said it cannot base questions on former senator Antonio Trillanes IV's claims against Vice President Sara Duterte because the statements were not made within the trial.
During a news forum in Quezon City, the House impeachment prosecution panel announced it will not allow questions derived from former senator Antonio Trillanes IV's accusations against Vice President Sara Duterte. Tolosa said Trillanes' statements were made outside the formal impeachment process, so they cannot be used as a basis for questioning. Trillanes had alleged that the vice president and her husband, lawyer Maneses Carpio, received P150 million and P319 million respectively from China through separate entities, but he asked to be removed as a witness and will present the claims in a press conference.
The prosecution will instead present financial witnesses, beginning with the Anti-Money Laundering Council executive director, followed by representatives from banks, insurance firms, and the Bureau of Internal Revenue to scrutinize the couple's accounts and net income. Tolosa urged the public to watch whether the forthcoming financial evidence corroborates Trillanes' allegations.
Why it matters
The decision limits how alleged foreign money transfers to the vice president will be examined in the high-profile impeachment case.
